Die no1

Reading (Tomlin)PAVLVS[
Comments on the Readings (Tomlin)Retrograde. Second L in 1.3 is uncertain; it looks more like a narrow V with the tail of S. The name is spelt either way, Paullus or Paulus.
RetrogradePAVLL
LigaturedLL
NotesLL ligatured, resembling upsidedown F; a faint V, probably V after LL. London, Southwark, Old Sleaford, Usk (Manning 1993, p421, no.6, Neronian context). There is no obvious reason to associate him with the Paullus who worked at Coulanges (Allier), who is probably too late to be the same man, or, with the Paulus whose only known stamp is in the British Museum (Bought at Sotheby's Sale 1848. CIL VII 1331, 87, as an 'amphora'), and which might be in VRW fabric though it looks an unlikely VRW stamp.
