Reading (Tomlin) | CIVIL[ |
Comments on the Readings (Tomlin) | Not clear whether the die ends with L. Perhaps L enclosed a small I, followed by (lost) S. Probably Civil[is], whether nominative or genitive. |
Ligatured | LI |
Notes | for CIVILIS?. LI ligatured. Probably complete, but clearer example needed for certain reading and interpretation. All stamped along the flange. The name has obviously been abbreviated and the most straightforward interpretation would be CIVILIS, but if there is a stop next to the C the stamp is then more likely to represent tria nomina with C for praenomen Caius. Lincoln example found in watching brief, immediately adjacent to west ditches of fortress; a stamp of his in the Boudiccan destruction deposit at North Hill, Colchester (unpublished). Stamp seen and recorded by Prof. Martin Millett; no rubbing available, but identification certain. The only stamp published in the past as 'Civilis' (Bushe-Fox 1949, 249, no.22) is a misinterpretation of a stamp of C.Iulius Priscus. |
