Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

Potter's MarkCIITTINVARI
Die no1
ReadingCIITTI(N)VARI
Reading (Tomlin)CIITTIVARI
Comments on the Readings (Tomlin)In the sequence of five vertical strokes, the middle pair are taller and apparently linked by a cross-stroke for TT. Before them, II for E, suggesting the Celtic name Cettus / Cettius (genitive Cetti). The next letter(s) are ligatured, whether NVA, NA or VA. VA is simplest and does not require N to be reversed. VARI would then be Cettius' cognomen Vari, or the second element in a name Cettivarus, either of them in the genitive.
LigaturedVA or VNA
Variant lettertwo Ts or two verticals
NotesII = E; VA or NVA ligatured. Exact reading & interpretation uncertain. Stamped along.Only example known: Caerwent, Wales, 29K Newport Mus. Dating based on bead continuing through the spout.
