Reading (Tomlin) | CIITTIVARI |
Comments on the Readings (Tomlin) | In the sequence of five vertical strokes, the middle pair are taller and apparently linked by a cross-stroke for TT. Before them, II for E, suggesting the Celtic name Cettus / Cettius (genitive Cetti). The next letter(s) are ligatured, whether NVA, NA or VA. VA is simplest and does not require N to be reversed. VARI would then be Cettius' cognomen Vari, or the second element in a name Cettivarus, either of them in the genitive. |
Ligatured | VA or VNA |
Variant letter | two Ts or two verticals |
Notes | II = E; VA or NVA ligatured. Exact reading & interpretation uncertain. Stamped along.Only example known: Caerwent, Wales, 29K Newport Mus. Dating based on bead continuing through the spout. |
