Potter's Mark | C.IVLIVS PRISCVS |
---|---|
Die no | 1 |
Reading | OFCIVLPRISC |
Reading (Tomlin) | OF C IVL PRIS[ |
Comments on the Readings (Tomlin) | Neat use of space: O encloses F and conjoins C; C encloses I; neat symmetrical ligature of P and R to second I. Unclear whether PRIS was completed by CI (for the genitive), but this is likely. It cannot be nominative PRISC[VS] after OF for of(ficina). |
Ligatured | PRI |
Variant letter | S with small C in upper loop |
Additional Letters to the Name | OF |
Notes | Officina of C Iulius Priscus. Reading: O with small F inside; C with small I, large VL; PRI ligatured, SC ligatured, ('I' not visible on any stamp, possibly inside small C). Name in genitive case following Officina. At least 6 mortaria of his were found at Noyon - for a relatively uncommon potter, this is a lot (Ben Redjeb 1992, figs 33-34); more stamps of his survive at Noyon than of any other potter . One more stamp at Rouen and at least five known in Britain. Most of his mortaria are closer in form to his mortarium at Carlisle (Howard-Davis 2009, fig 298, no. 6) or those of Buc(c)us than to form Gillam 238. |
