Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

Die Record: C.IVLIVS PRISCVS 1

Potter's MarkC.IVLIVS PRISCVS
Die no1
ReadingOFCIVLPRISC
Reading (Tomlin)OF C IVL PRIS[
Comments on the Readings (Tomlin)Neat use of space: O encloses F and conjoins C; C encloses I; neat symmetrical ligature of P and R to second I. Unclear whether PRIS was completed by CI (for the genitive), but this is likely. It cannot be nominative PRISC[VS] after OF for of(ficina).
LigaturedPRI
Variant letterS with small C in upper loop
Additional Letters to the NameOF
NotesOfficina of C Iulius Priscus. Reading: O with small F inside; C with small I, large VL; PRI ligatured, SC ligatured, ('I' not visible on any stamp, possibly inside small C). Name in genitive case following Officina. At least 6 mortaria of his were found at Noyon - for a relatively uncommon potter, this is a lot (Ben Redjeb 1992, figs 33-34); more stamps of his survive at Noyon than of any other potter . One more stamp at Rouen and at least five known in Britain. Most of his mortaria are closer in form to his mortarium at Carlisle (Howard-Davis 2009, fig 298, no. 6) or those of Buc(c)us than to form Gillam 238.

IndustryNoyonnais
Kiln Group or IndustryNo kilns known, but the number of mortaria of this relatively rare potter at Noyon (Oise) is consistent with production nearby. See introduction.
