Potter's Mark | ADIVTOR |
---|---|
Die no | 1 |
Reading | ADIVTORE |
Reading (Tomlin) | ADIVTOR FE |
Comments on the Readings (Tomlin) | A with a short vertical medial stroke, 'open' R (influenced by cursive form), E has a slight downward extension as if for FE ligatured, i.e. fe(cit). If it were only E, ADIVTORE (ablative) would be difficult. |
Ligatured | FE |
Variant letter | A with short medial vertical dash. "open" R |
Additional Letters to the Name | FE |
Notes | E= FE ligatured; A with dash. His work is present on a kiln-site at Amay, Liege, Belgium and and it is likely that he also worked at Bavai (Nord). Production elsewhere is also possible. The only two mortaria I have seen or know of, with a Die 1 stamp, were both made in the first century or in the earliest years of the 2C; both are in Britain and both from Colchester. See Hull 1958, p.126, no.24 in first-century context (364K). Both with first-century profiles. |
